itinerary 

Day 1- Thursday, August 31, Arrive in Crete
Arrive in the Chania area of Crete. Check-in to our hotel right on the port. Relax and get acquainted with the area befor meeting Walt and Alex for our welcome dinner.
Meals: Welcome Dinner
Accommodations: Porto Veneziano Hotel

Day 2- Friday, September 1, Old Town Chania and Greek Cooking Lesson
We start this morning right outside of our hotel on the port of Chania. In front of the Venetian lighthouse, the Grand Arsenal, Kum Kapi and Halepa. We'll have our first workshop with Walt and Alex. Mid afternoon we’ll have an authentic Greek cooking lesson together, proceeding into dinner with wine.

Day 3- Saturday, September 2, Full Chania Workshop Day at the Venetian harbor
So many places to paint in Chania we will have two sessions in the area. The Venetian harbor was built by the Venetians between 1320 and 1356. It doesn’t serve as a port for the large ships anymore now, you will find only fishing boats, yachts and sailing boats. Dinner together near the port.

Day 4- Sunday, September 3, Full Chania Workshop Day
So many places to paint in Chania we will have two sessions in the area. The Grand Arsenal that was built during the 1600’s and the Venetian Dockyards built in the 16th century used by the Venetian to repair their fleet. Dinner together on the town.

Day 5-Monday, September 4,  Full Chania Workshop Day
So many places to paint in Chania we will have two sessions in the area lead by Walter. Dinner together in the evening.

Day 6- Tuesday, September 5, Rethymno and Heraklion
Today we will leave Chania and drive to Heraklion stopping at Rethymnon. We will have a walking tour of the Rethymnon old town. After lunch a workshop in the historic center. Then drive to Heraklion to check-in to our new hotel.

Day 7- Friday, September 6, Full Heraklion Workshop Day
So many places to paint in Heraklion we will have two sessions in the area. You can easily spend a morning or afternoon strolling around the Old Town, seeing the sites and soaking up the atmosphere. Heraklion grew up around the sea, and still today, the old town focuses on the harbor. The most notable monument along the harbor is the 16th-century Venetian Fort of Koules. Fishing boats line the shore. Across the road but fronting the harbor are the Venetian Arsenals, easily recognizable by the stone facade and huge archways. This is where the Venetians repaired their ships. After two painting sessions, we have dinner together as a group.

Day 8- Saturday, September 7, Epano Arhanes and The Palace of Knossos 
Today we will visit the picturesque village of Epano Arhanes (a 30min drive away), for the group to explore different painting themes. After lunch we will stop at The Palace of Knossos  Κνωσός was the oldest and most sophisticated city of the ancient western world. This site was the first inhabited area of ancient Crete, from as early as 7000 BC, and subsequently became the largest and most influential of Minoan centres. Guided tour before returning to Heraklion.

Day 9- Sunday, September 8, Full Heraklion Workshop Day
So many places to paint in Heraklion we will have two sessions in the area. Dedicated to the patron saint of Heraklion, the Cathedral of St. Minas is an impressive building located in the Old Town. Dating from the late 19th-century, this is the largest church in Crete, and it's renowned for its extensive religious iconography. Another good painting spot is Agios Titos Church. You'll most likely come across this historic church as you walk the pedestrian zone of Heraklion. It is unmistakable, with two massive palm trees in front. After our morning painting sessions, we have our final workshop with Walter before ending our tour with a goodbye dinner together.

Day 10- Monday, September 9, End of workshop
Get your transfer from your hotel to the Heraklion airport.

Frequently asked questions
​

My partner does not paint, is there something for him/her to do?
Yes, we are painting about 6-7 hours a day. Most locations are in villages or places of interest. There is ample time and things for a non-painter to do and explore. Crete is very walkable and easy to explore.

How many hours a day will we be painting?
Every day we will be painting a minimum of 6-8 hours. There will also be the option for sunset and night painting. We list daily in the itinerary the estimated hours for each day. We start off lighter and increase the hours as the week progresses.

Is my deposit of $400 refundable?
No, we have limited space and need a commitment from each guest. Please note that the deposit of $400 per guest
is NON-REFUNDABLE except in the case that the trip does not meet the minimum number of participants.

Where are we staying?
We are staying 5 nights in Chania, on the water looking over the old port Porto Veneziano Hotel
​And in Heraklion, 4 nights in Dimargio Hotel
​

How do we pack?
We have two pre-meeting at the Yellow Barn Studio before the trip to explain packing and general information. Both meetings are broadcast live for those that can't physically attend.

Do I need Travel Insurance? Where can I purchase Insurance?
We highly recommend Travel Insurance. Travel insurance is based on many factors and the price varies from person to person. You can get a quote from our agent Carol Symington, csymington@AAASJ.COM . Please mention your tour, the dates, price and that it is Tierno Tours. 

Is my flight included?
No, This is a land package only.

How do I book my flights?
As soon as the group is formed we will be sending out airfare quotes from the surrounding DC area. If you are out of state or have extended dates you can contact Carol Symington, csymington@AAASJ.COM  and we can help you book our flights.
​If booking your own airfare:

Departure from the USA no later than Wednesday, August 30th to the 
 Chania International and Domestic Airport (CHQ), Walter Bartman workshop ends Saturday, September 9th out of  the Heraklion International and Domestic Airport (HER) we will provide transfers to and from airports.

How do I get from the airport to the Hotel?
Transfers will be provided to everyone on Day one and on Day 10 of the workshop. If you are coming in early or leaving later than the workshop dates, we will help you get a transfer with a local company.

How much is the cost of the Transfer?
Private taxi about 30euro for 2 persons with bags, shared minivan 80euro up to 4/5 persons with bags. We will help everyone based on all your plans before and after the workshop to get the best rates for airfare and transfers if needed.
