This workshop promises an extraordinary experience aboard a Deluxe 50-meter yacht with 17 cabins. We'll sail to a new island each day during breakfast and lunch, ensuring we make the most of our time. Upon arrival, we’ll embark on immersive painting sessions, allowing you to capture the beauty of each unique destination. Evenings will be spent in different ports, perfect for night painting, and every dinner will offer breathtaking views of the water.

The Walter Bartman painting workshop is from September 3 to 12, 2025. This is our 1st draft itinerary; the final itinerary will be posted in January 2025.

Day 1: SPLIT - MAKARSKA

• Departure from Split Harbor at 13:00h (we recommend arriving a day early).
• Cruise along the Dalmatian coast towards Makarska while enjoying lunch.
• Afternoon swim at one of the beautiful beaches.
• Walt's first painting demo in Makarska.
• Explore the magic of Makarska Riviera with its abundance of churches and cultural sites.
• Overnight in Makarska.
• One painting session today.
• Welcome dinner with our hosts Walter and Alex Bartman
• Meals: Lunch and Welcome Dinner

Makarska is nestled between the Biokovo Mountain range and the Adriatic Sea, providing stunning natural landscapes and scenic views. Known for its long, sandy beaches, Makarska is a popular tourist spot that offers a blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration. Local Cuisine Specialties: Makarska offers fresh seafood dishes such as octopus, squid, and Dalmatian fish stew. Try the "Makarana," a traditional almond cake.

Day 2: MAKARSKA - BOL (BRAČ) - STARI GRAD

• Morning cruise to the island of Brač.
• Stop in a small fishing port for a morning painting session and lunch.
• Continue to Stari Grad on Hvar island, the sunniest Adriatic island.
• Afternoon painting session in Stari Grad.
• Overnight in one of the ports of Stari Grad.
• Two painting sessions guided by Walter today.
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Stari Grad, situated on the island of Hvar, is one of Croatia’s oldest towns, founded by the ancient Greeks in 384 B.C. Known for its deep historical roots, the town seamlessly blends its rich heritage with modern charm.
The town itself is a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets, lined with charming stone houses, local shops, and cozy cafés. The waterfront promenade is especially enchanting, offering picturesque views of the Adriatic Sea and moored boats.
Key attractions include the Tvrdalj Castle, the fortified summer residence of the Renaissance poet Petar Hektorović, and the Dominican Monastery, home to an impressive collection of art and artifacts. The Church of St. Stephen, with its beautiful bell tower, is another must-see.

Day 3: STARI GRAD - HVAR

• Morning painting session after breakfast in Stari Grad.
• Cruise to Hvar, a favorite destination for jet setters worldwide.
• Sunset painting session.
• Two painting sessions guided by Walt, Stari Grad and Hvar
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Hvar, a dazzling island in the Adriatic Sea, is one of Croatia's most popular and sunniest destinations. Known for its vibrant nightlife, historical landmarks, and stunning landscapes The town of Hvar itself is a picturesque blend of Renaissance and Venetian architecture. The main square, Trg Sv. Stjepana, is surrounded by historic buildings and the beautiful St. Stephen's Cathedral. Overlooking the town is the Spanjola Fortress, offering panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding islands.
Cultural attractions abound, including the Franciscan Monastery, home to a remarkable collection of art and artifacts, and the oldest communal theater in Europe, founded in 1612. The Benedictine Convent is famous for its lacework, a UNESCO-listed heritage.

Day 4: HVAR - VIS

• Early morning cruise to the island of Vis.
• Vis, once a strategic navy harbor, offers a unique charm.
• Overnight in the town of Vis.
• Two painting sessions guided by Walt in Vis.
• Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Vis is one of Croatia's most enchanting and secluded destinations. Known for its unspoiled beauty and rich history, Vis remained a military base until 1989, which helped preserve its authentic charm. The town of Vis features remnants of ancient Greek and Roman settlements, including the well-preserved Roman baths. With its relaxed atmosphere, vibrant local cuisine, and stunning landscapes.

Day 5: VIS - KORČULA

• Departure towards Korčula during breakfast.
• Explore the birthplace of Marco Polo.
• Guided walking tour of old town Korčula.
• Watch the Spanish medieval knight's game, Moreška. with dinner.
• Overnight in port.
• Two painting sessions guided by Walter in Korčula.
• Meals: Breakfast and Dinner and show

Korčula, often dubbed "Little Dubrovnik," is a charming island town in Croatia noted for its medieval architecture and rich cultural heritage. Enclosed by stone walls, the old town features narrow, cobbled streets arranged in a fishbone pattern. Highlights include St. Mark's Cathedral and the Marco Polo Museum, dedicated to the famous explorer who is believed to have been born here. Korčula also hosts the unique Moreška sword dance, a traditional performance dating back centuries. 

Day 6: KORČULA - MLJET - SLANO

• Cruise to the green island of Mljet.
• Morning painting session in Mljet National Park.
• Boat ride to the St Mary Isle with its old church and monastery.
• Continue to Slano, a small fishing village.
• Captain's dinner onboard.
• Two painting sessions guided by Walt today.
• Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Mljet, is renowned for its lush landscapes and unspoiled natural beauty. The western part of the island is home to Mljet National Park, featuring two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezero, and the historic St. Mary’s Island with its ancient Benedictine monastery. Dense forests, secluded beaches, and scenic hiking trails make Mljet a haven for nature lovers and adventurers seeking tranquility amidst pristine surroundings.
Slano, a picturesque village along the Dubrovnik Riviera, offers a serene escape with its beautiful bay, sandy beaches, and olive groves. Rich in history, Slano features the Franciscan Monastery of St. Jerome and ruins from the Roman period. The calm waters are ideal for sailing and swimming, and the village itself offers a glimpse into traditional Croatian life, complete with local cuisine and warm hospitality.

Day 7: SLANO - DUBROVNIK

• Early morning departure to Dubrovnik.
• Stroll along the city walls with magnificent views.
• Full day of painting guided by Walt in Dubrovnik.
• Overnight in the harbor Gruž.
• Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is a UNESCO-listed city on Croatia's southern coast. Famous for its stunning medieval architecture and well-preserved city walls, Dubrovnik offers breathtaking views, historic sites like the Rector's Palace and Stradun, and vibrant culture. Its blend of ancient charm and modern vibrancy makes it a must-visit destination.  

Day 8: Kotor Bay, Montenegro

• After breakfast, transfer by bus to Kotor Bay.
• Arrival at 11:00h with a boat ride around the bay.
• Free time for lunch and hotel check-in.
• Afternoon painting session guided by Walt.
• Dinner together in town.
• Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9: Kotor Bay

• Full-day painting session in town guided by Walt.
• Meals: Breakfast and Dinner

Nestled between towering mountains, Kotor Bay offers stunning scenery and a well-preserved medieval old town. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its winding streets, ancient churches like St. Tryphon's Cathedral, and rich maritime history. The bay’s dramatic landscapes and cultural heritage make it a captivating destination.

Day 10: Transfer to Dubrovnik Airport

Frequently asked questions​

My partner does not paint, is there something for him/her to do?
Yes, we are painting about 6-7 hours a day. Most locations are in villages or places of interest. There is ample time and things for a non-painter to do and explore. The islands are very walkable and easy to explore.

How many hours a day will we be painting?
Every day we will be painting a minimum of 6-8 hours. There will also be the option for sunset and night painting. We list daily in the itinerary the estimated hours for each day. We start off lighter and increase the hours as the week progresses.

Is my deposit of $400 refundable?
No, we have limited space and need a commitment from each guest. Please note that the deposit of $400 per guest
is NON-REFUNDABLE except in the case that the trip does not meet the minimum number of participants. 

How do we pack?
We have two pre-meeting at the Yellow Barn Studio before the trip to explain packing and general information. Both meetings are broadcast live for those that can't physically attend.

Do I need Travel Insurance? Where can I purchase Insurance?
We highly recommend Travel Insurance. Travel insurance is based on many factors and the price varies from person to person. You can get a quote from our agent Carol Symington, [email protected] . Please mention your tour, the dates, price and that it is Tierno Tours. 

​Is my flight included?
No, This is a land package only.

Where are we staying?
We are staying 7 nights on the ship Fatazija
​And in Montenegro , 2 nights on Kotor Bay ​

How do I book my flights?
As soon as the group is formed we will be sending out airfare quotes from the surrounding DC area. If you are out of state or have extended dates you can contact Carol Symington, [email protected]  and we can help you book our flights.

Walter Bartman workshop ends Friday, September 12, 2025 out of  the Dubrovnik airport (DBV). Please send us your flight information asap to [email protected].

How do I get from the airport to the Hotel?
Day 1 each guest will get there own transfer to the ship in Split. A taxi is about 30Euro. On Day 10 we have a transfer for all guests to the Dubrovnik airport (DBV). If you are coming in before the workshop we recommend the ​Brown Beach Hotel in Trogir. It is just a short 5 min walk to the island and it's the historic center.

How much is the cost of the Transfer?
Private taxi about 30euro for 2 persons with bags, shared minivan 80euro up to 4/5 persons with bags. We will help everyone based on all your plans before and after the workshop to get the best rates for airfare and transfers.
